For over 300 years, Spanish was the official language during Spanish rule. By the early 20th century, 60% of the population spoke Spanish as their first, second, or third language. However, after the American occupation in the early 1900s, the use of Spanish began to decline. In 1935, the Philippine Constitution declared English and Spanish as official languages. In 1939, Tagalog was designated the national language, which was renamed "Filipino" in 1973. The current constitution recognizes both Filipino and English as joint and equal official languages..
